The Enugu State Government has warned residents about the outbreak of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI), commonly known as Bird Flu, which has recently been reported in Kano State.
Affected Bird Species and Potential Spread
According to the state Commissioner for Agriculture and Agro-Industrialisation, Patrick Ubru, the outbreak in Kano has affected several bird species, including:
- Layers
- Ducks
- Guinea fowl
- Turkeys
With Nigeria’s current environmental conditions and the disease's epidemiology, Ubru highlighted the high risk of the outbreak spreading to neighbouring states, including Enugu.
Government’s Preventive Measures
To mitigate risks and protect the state’s poultry industry and public health, the Enugu State Government has:
- Directed veterinary personnel to intensify preventive measures.
- Launched educational campaigns for poultry farmers, traders, and the public on the dangers of HPAI and preventive strategies.
