Chris Okewulonu, former Chief of Staff to ex-Imo State Governor Emeka Ihedioha, and Chuma Nnaji, Ihedioha’s former deputy governorship candidate, have officially defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) along with their supporters. The duo made the announcement on Friday at the APC secretariat in Owerri, where Okewulonu addressed party members.

Okewulonu explained that his resignation from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) followed deep introspection and consultations with family and political colleagues. He expressed disappointment with the PDP's erosion of values, which prompted his decision to seek a more effective platform to serve his people.

Reflecting on his time away from politics, Okewulonu cited the internal divisions in both major political parties and questioned whether he could continue supporting an ineffective opposition. He commended Governor Hope Uzodimma’s leadership, highlighting the administration’s achievements in infrastructure and human capacity building as reasons for his defection.

Governor Uzodimma welcomed the defectors, calling their decision a sign of APC’s growing influence in Imo. He emphasized the party’s commitment to improving the lives of the state’s citizens and compared the recruitment of Okewulonu and Nnaji to signing elite players, underscoring their importance to the party’s future success.
