The family of Iretiogo Akanro, who died during a CT scan at Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Abeokuta, Ogun State, plans to sue the hospital for her 'avoidable' death. Accusing the hospital of negligence, they are also demanding N700 million in damages.
Iretiogo, known as Ireti, had a persistent cough and initially sought treatment at Sacred Heart Hospital, Lantoro. After her condition failed to improve, she was referred to FMC's Pulmonology Department. A doctor there conducted a Spirometry test and scheduled a CT scan for May 24. Sadly, Ireti died following complications from the scan.
The family's lawyers, Don Akaegbu & Company, claimed hospital staff exhibited negligence before and during the scan. They alleged that staff failed to consider Ireti’s special communication needs and did not administer a test dose of the contrast dye to check for adverse reactions. They also stated that only an inexperienced young doctor was present during the scan, with no consultant or senior personnel available.
Heartbroken, the family issued a pre-action notice to FMC’s Chief Medical Director, outlining the alleged lapses that led to Ireti’s death. Hospital spokesman Segun Orisajo said, "the hospital management will react appropriately in due course."
