The Federal Government, through the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), has commissioned a 100kWp solar hybrid mini-grid in the Uhuafor Nomeh community, Nkanu East Local Government Area, Enugu State. This project, delivered under the REA’s Rural Electrification Fund – Call 2 programme, promises to transform life in Nomeh and three neighboring communities, which have endured over 18 years without electricity.
Governor Peter Mbah, represented by his Special Adviser on Power, Sir Joe Aneke, praised the REA for its commitment to rural energy access, stating that this project aligns with Enugu’s vision of sustainable development and innovation. “This electrification project will empower Nomeh’s residents with new economic and educational opportunities, supporting our broader goal of making Enugu State energy-efficient and green,” he said. He encouraged the community to safeguard this asset, as it holds potential for future growth.
REA Managing Director, Abba Abubakar Aliyu, represented by Executive Director Engr. Doris Uboh, emphasized that this project reflects the federal government’s mission to connect rural communities to sustainable energy sources, thereby enhancing local economies. “Take care of this mini-grid,” she advised, noting that its careful management could pave the way for future expansions and community development.
Nomeh’s traditional ruler, Igwe I.O. Mbah, expressed profound gratitude, recalling the 18-year blackout the community endured. “Our children no longer need to burn candles to study. Today, we are living with new hope,” he said, assuring the government of the community’s commitment to protecting the infrastructure.
The electrification project is anticipated to bring economic uplift, improved education, and new opportunities to Nomeh and its neighboring communities.
