The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to bold economic reforms, dismissing recent criticism from the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, as misguided and influenced by personal interests.
In a strongly worded response, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, said the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu does not require the Emir’s endorsement to pursue policies aimed at transforming Nigeria’s economy.
Sanusi’s Critique and the Government’s Response
Speaking at an event in Lagos on Wednesday, Sanusi expressed doubts about the administration’s handling of the economy, claiming he would refrain from assisting the government. In reply, Idris called Sanusi’s comments divisive, emphasizing that such rhetoric is counterproductive at a time when unity and collective effort are crucial.
"It is deeply disappointing that reforms widely recognized as essential by global experts—including by Emir Sanusi II himself—are now being subtly condemned by him because of a shift in loyalty," Idris said.
The Minister highlighted that some of the policies Sanusi criticized align with the Emir's previous recommendations, suggesting a contradiction in his stance.
Achievements of Economic Reforms
Idris outlined the administration’s progress, noting key reforms such as:
- Exchange Rate Unification: Boosting investor confidence and strengthening foreign reserves.
- Fuel Subsidy Removal: Freeing up resources for critical investments in infrastructure, education, and healthcare.
- Debt Service-to-Revenue Ratio Reduction: Establishing a more sustainable fiscal framework.
The Minister also cited projections from the World Bank, which forecast an upward trajectory in Nigeria’s GDP, as evidence of the administration’s success.
Call for Constructive Dialogue
Idris urged Sanusi to use his economic expertise constructively, rather than undermining policies aimed at long-term growth.
"Rebuilding Nigeria requires unity, focus, and sacrifice from all stakeholders. This administration is open to constructive dialogue with all well-meaning stakeholders, while remaining steadfast in putting the interests of Nigerians above all else," Idris said.
Faith in the Tinubu Administration
The Minister called on Nigerians to trust in President Tinubu’s vision, emphasizing that temporary hardships are necessary for sustainable growth. He urged leaders to rise above personal interests and support the collective goal of a prosperous Nigeria.
"The challenges we face demand courage and collective effort, not divisive narratives. Together, we will deliver on the promise of renewed hope and a better Nigeria for all."
The statement underscores the government’s commitment to staying the course, even in the face of criticism, while extending an olive branch for collaboration with all stakeholders.
