The Federal Government inaugurated a 46-member committee on Thursday to review and identify outdated laws in Nigeria. The committee, chaired by Mr. Olawale Fapohunda, SAN, and co-chaired by Professor Jummai Audi of the Nigerian Law Reform Commission, was given six months to complete its work. The initiative is part of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration's efforts to promote the rule of law, enhance justice access, and drive socio-economic growth.
Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, stressed the importance of updating the Laws of the Federation, which have not been revised since 2004. The committee, composed of retired judges, Senior Advocates of Nigeria, and officials from the Nigeria Law Reform Commission and Ministry of Justice, will harmonize conflicting laws, repeal outdated provisions, and streamline legal frameworks to promote investment and efficiency.
The AGF emphasized the need for continuous legal reform to adapt to technological and socio-economic developments, urging the committee to meet its deadline.
