Federal workers under certain consolidated categories have received a pay rise ranging from 25% to 35%, effective from January 1. The announcement, made by the National Salaries, Incomes, and Wages Commission (NSIWC), comes just ahead of the Workers Day celebrations.
The pay rise affects various consolidated salary structures, including CONPSS, CONRAISS, CONPOSS, CONPASS, CONICCS, and CONAFSS. Pensioners enrolled in the Defined Benefits Scheme under these structures will also receive a 20% to 28% increase, effective from January 1.
The ongoing talks by the Tripartite Committee on minimum wage, petrol subsidy withdrawal, and the forex crisis are expected to dominate discussions at the Workers Day event venues. The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) plans to use the occasion to address the impact of the hike in electricity tariff and petroleum prices, and to push for the speedy conclusion of the new minimum wage negotiations.
Meanwhile, various leaders and organizations have praised the resilience and dedication of Nigerian workers. Edo Governor, Godwin Obaseki, announced a raise in the state's minimum wage from N40,000 to N70,000, while the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) called for better wages and working conditions for workers, urging the government to prioritize workers' welfare.
