The Federal Government and Borno State have partnered to upgrade the General Muhammadu Buhari International Airport, Maiduguri, to international standards, with full operations set to begin on January 1, 2025.
Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, led a delegation of aviation agency leaders, including FAAN Managing Director Olubunmi Kuku and NAMA’s Engr. Farouk Umar, on a working visit to Maiduguri. The team, which also included Customs, DSS, Immigration, and NDLEA officials, was received by Governor Babagana Zulum.
Keyamo emphasized the project's significance, highlighting its potential to transform the airport into a regional cargo hub and a symbol of resilience for the North East. “With its world-class runway and state-of-the-art facilities, this will be the first fully operational international airport in the North East,” he stated.
Governor Zulum expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for Keyamo’s leadership in advancing aviation development and reiterated the state’s commitment to supporting the project.
The upgrade aims to boost connectivity, trade, and economic growth in the region, positioning Maiduguri as a critical player in Nigeria’s international aviation landscape. The collaboration underscores the Federal Government’s dedication to regional development and national integration.
