The Federal Government has fulfilled its promise of financial support to the family of the late Pa Taiwo Akinkunmi, the renowned designer of Nigeria’s National Flag, by donating ₦30 million, nearly two years after his passing.
The official presentation of the cheque was made on Thursday at Akinkunmi’s Ibadan residence in Elebu by the Director General of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Lanre Issa-Onilu, alongside the Oyo State Director of NOA, Olukemi Afolayan.
Honoring a National Hero
Pa Taiwo Akinkunmi, who passed away on August 29, 2023, at 87 years old, was celebrated for his immense contribution to Nigeria’s identity through the creation of the national flag in 1959.
During a condolence visit on September 4, 2023, President Bola Tinubu’s government had pledged to honor the late hero with a national burial and provide financial support to his family.
Speaking on the donation, NOA DG Issa-Onilu emphasized that the money was not a payment for Akinkunmi’s patriotic service, but rather a gesture of appreciation for his contributions to the country.
"The donation of ₦30 million to the family of the renowned National Flag designer was not to pay for the services of the late legend, but to support his family in appreciation of his contributions to the country," he said.
Akinkunmi’s Family Expresses Gratitude
One of the deceased’s sons, Akinwunmi Akinkunmi, expressed deep appreciation to President Tinubu for keeping the government’s promise and recognizing his father’s legacy.
The donation marks a symbolic acknowledgment of Pa Akinkunmi’s enduring impact on Nigeria’s national identity, though many Nigerians continue to call for better recognition and support for the families of national icons.
