The Federal Government has advised Nigerians to avoid consuming locally made drinks such as kunu, zobo, and fura to prevent cholera. In a statement on Monday, Minister of State for Environment Iziaq Salako urged the public to practice good sanitation and hygiene at home and work.
Salako emphasized the importance of using clean, safe water, recommending boiling or treating suspicious water sources. He advised against consuming locally prepared drinks unless their preparation is known to be hygienic. Regular handwashing with soap under running water is crucial in preventing the spread of cholera.

States and local governments were called to enhance environmental health surveillance in places where food and drinks are sold, including markets, schools, and event venues. Salako stressed that these measures are essential to control the spread of cholera and urged environmental health officers to intensify sanitation activities.
The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) reported 1,159 suspected cholera cases, with 65 confirmed and 30 deaths across 30 states. Salako highlighted the need for collaboration with health authorities to combat this public health threat, exacerbated by poor sanitation and extreme climate events like flooding.
