The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) has reported a fire incident that gutted several shanties in the Surulere area of Lagos.

Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, the Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, confirmed the incident in a statement on Saturday.

According to the statement, distress calls were received through the state’s emergency toll-free lines (767 and 112) at 1:18 a.m., prompting the deployment of the LASEMA response team from Onipanu.

“Upon arrival at 1:31 a.m., it was discovered that a row of makeshift shanty structures erected beside the canal had been gutted by fire. Preliminary investigations revealed that the fire originated in one of the rooms and rapidly spread to others in the row,” Oke-Osanyintolu explained.

The swift intervention of emergency responders ensured the fire was brought under control without any casualties or injuries reported.

“The fire has been completely extinguished, and dampening down, search, and rescue operations have been concluded,” he added.

The agency emphasized the importance of fire safety awareness, particularly in densely populated areas with makeshift structures.
