The Office of the First Lady of Nigeria has called for understanding following disciplinary action taken against nursing students in Delta State, who faced consequences for their playful chants during the First Lady's visit earlier this week.
The incident occurred on Tuesday at the Dome Event Centre in Asaba, during the Renewed Hope Initiative’s donation of 10,000 professional kits to midwives. The event, aimed at boosting morale among healthcare workers, turned controversial when a viral video showed students from Delta State College of Nursing Sciences adding a light-hearted twist to their welcome song.
In response, the First Lady’s Senior Special Assistant on Media, Busola Kukoyi, issued a statement on Friday, acknowledging the students' enthusiasm but emphasizing the need for a balance between free expression and institutional discipline.
“While we respect the right of institutions to uphold discipline, it is important to recognize that students, in moments of excitement, often express themselves in a light-hearted and jovial manner,” Kukoyi’s statement read.
The statement further clarified that the First Lady’s visit was meant to inspire midwives and reduce maternal mortality, highlighting the warm reception from the Delta State Government and attendees.
However, reports later surfaced indicating that some students had been issued queries for their participation in the altered chants.
“The First Lady’s visit was intended to inspire and uplift healthcare professionals, and it is our hope that this event remains a positive and motivating experience for all involved,” the statement continued.
The Office of the First Lady urged the college to handle the matter fairly, encouraging educational institutions to create environments where students feel safe to express themselves, while maintaining decorum.
