Former Imo State Governor Emeka Ihedioha announced his resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Tuesday, April 23. Speculations suggest his decision may stem from the party's ongoing internal conflicts, exacerbated by recent unsuccessful efforts by the national leadership to resolve them.
In a letter dated April 23, addressed to his ward chairman in Mbutu, Aboh-Mbaise LGA, and copied to the national chairman of PDP, chairman of the party’s Board of Trustees, and PDP chairman in Imo State, Ihedioha, a long-time ally of former vice president Atiku Abubakar and former deputy speaker of the House of Representatives, expressed his belief that resigning from the PDP was the right decision.
The letter highlighted Ihedioha's longstanding involvement with the PDP since its founding in 1998, noting his pride in the party's history of internal reform and credible leadership. However, he lamented that recent developments within the party have diverged from his personal principles. Ihedioha expressed regret that despite his efforts to provide counsel, the PDP appeared unable to conduct internal reforms, uphold its rules, or effectively challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
In conclusion, Ihedioha affirmed his commitment to continue contributing to democracy and good governance in Nigeria despite his resignation from the PDP.
