Nigeria is mourning the loss of one of its most prominent leaders, as former President Muhammadu Buhari has passed away.
The news was confirmed on Sunday evening through a statement released by his former Special Assistant, Garba Shehu. According to the announcement, Buhari died earlier in the day at a clinic in London, where he had been receiving care.
The brief but emotional statement read:
“INNA LILLAHI WA INNA ILAIHIRRAJIUUN. The family of the former president has announced the passing of Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, this afternoon in a clinic in London. May Allah accept him in Aljannatul Firdaus, Amin.”
Buhari, who served as Nigeria’s Head of State from 1983 to 1985 and later as democratically elected President from 2015 to 2023, leaves behind a legacy that will be debated and remembered for years to come.
More details are expected to emerge as the nation prepares to honour a former leader who shaped the course of its recent history.
