Former Youth and Sports Minister AVM Adebayo Lawal Dies at 83

A former Nigerian Minister of Youth and Sports, Air Vice Marshal Adebayo Hamed Lawal (rtd), passed away in his sleep on Sunday, June 23, at the age of 83. His daughter, Mrs. Yinka Enahoro, confirmed his peaceful passing at his home.

The Sergeant at Arms at the National Assembly, Air Commodore Sani Zakari (rtd), also confirmed the news, adding that the funeral took place yesterday. AVM Frank Ajobena (rtd) informed the media that AVM Lawal died early Sunday morning.

Born on September 14, 1941, in Offa, Kwara State, AVM Lawal attended Government College, Ibadan, and joined the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) in 1963 as one of its pioneer officers. He trained as a Military Pilot in West Germany, graduating in 1964. His career included commanding various NAF bases and serving as Air Officer Commanding HQ Tactical Air Command in Makurdi.

Lawal was also a Military Governor of Benue State from July 1978 to October 1979 and later served as the Federal Minister of Youth and Sports. After retiring from the military, he ventured into business and philanthropy. He is survived by his wife, children, and grandchildren.
