The Katsina State Police Command has confirmed that four people lost their lives following a stampede during the distribution of annual Ramadan alms in Kofar Guga Quarters, Katsina State.
According to a statement issued on Sunday by the command’s spokesperson, Abubakar Aliyu, the incident occurred around 9pm on February 26. Police said a distress call was received at the Central Police Station reporting that a large crowd had gathered at the residence of a philanthropist, Alhaji Dahiru Usman Sarki, where alms were being shared.
The crowd surge reportedly led to a stampede, leaving several people injured. Officers were immediately deployed to the scene, and victims were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment. Sadly, four of the injured later died from their injuries.

The Commissioner of Police, Bello Shehu, expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and wished those receiving treatment a speedy recovery. He also ordered a full investigation into the incident and directed that measures be put in place to prevent a recurrence.
The police command urged individuals and organisations planning similar charity events to inform security authorities in advance. It said prior notification would allow for proper crowd control and security arrangements to ensure safety and order during such gatherings.
Investigations into the incident are ongoing, and further updates are expected as authorities continue their review.
