The Federal Road Safety Corps has issued a nationwide directive mandating all construction companies working on Nigerian roads to immediately install proper and adequate road signs at every construction site.
According to the Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, the directive aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s ongoing push to rehabilitate and expand the country’s road network. The FRSC says the new measure is crucial for safeguarding motorists who navigate construction zones daily.
In a statement signed by the FRSC spokesperson, Olusegun Ogungbemide, the corps emphasized that the order aims to prevent accidents caused by poor or missing signage. Construction companies are now required to install, maintain, and continually update warning, information, and diversion signs at both active and inactive construction points — with no exceptions.
Mohammed has also directed all FRSC commanding officers to begin strict enforcement immediately. He condemned the consistent failure of some contractors to provide adequate safety signs, noting that such negligence puts road users in serious danger.
He added that the directive is final and enforceable, and warned that construction companies who fail to comply with approved safety standards will face decisive regulatory actions. FRSC field commands will intensify monitoring across the country.
The corps marshal reiterated FRSC’s commitment to ensuring that the Federal Government’s heavy investment in road infrastructure results in safer travel for Nigerians.
For years, FRSC has raised concerns about improper or missing road signs at construction and maintenance sites nationwide. As far back as 2010, officials warned that inadequate signs and poorly managed diversions were turning construction zones into death traps.

The agency has previously tried to standardise road signage through a “Standard Road Signage Code” and even launched a signage production centre in Gwagwalada to support compliance. Despite these efforts, many contractors still fall short, contributing to preventable accidents, especially around diversion points.
The new directive signals a renewed push for strict compliance to ensure uniform, clear, and safe road signage across all construction sites in Nigeria.
