Fubara Blasts IGP Over Alleged Police Interference at Rivers Electoral Office

Rivers

Rivers State Governor Siminialayi Fubara expressed outrage during a late-night visit to the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RISIEC) on Friday. Arriving around 1 a.m., Fubara was furious after receiving intelligence that armed policemen had been deployed to take over the premises. The Governor questioned the legality of the police presence, calling out the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) for what he described as interference in the state's election process.

Fubara slammed the IGP, accusing him of collaborating with individuals seeking to disrupt the state's electoral proceedings. He emphasized that a court ruling only restricted the use of voter registers, not the conduct of elections, and questioned why the police would withdraw security meant to safeguard the RISIEC office. "We don't need your security; we'll provide our own," Fubara declared, referencing a similar situation in Anambra State.

The Governor further accused the IGP of having a questionable relationship with a powerful individual in Rivers State, suggesting that the police actions were politically motivated. He made it clear that despite any interference, the election would proceed as planned, and results would be declared.

In a strong warning to the IGP, Fubara stated that he would not tolerate any further attempts to obstruct the election. "This is my property, and you have no authority to prevent me from accessing it," he said, adding that any future actions would cement the IGP's legacy as corrupt and fraudulent. Fubara assured Rivers residents that the elections would hold, regardless of external pressures.
