Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour Announces Intention to Contest 2027 Lagos Governorship Election

Rhodes-Vivour

Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, popularly known as GRV, has declared his intention to join the 2027 governorship race in Lagos State. Speaking on Channels Television's Politics Today, Rhodes-Vivour confirmed his ambition to run again, stating his commitment to achieving his vision for Lagos despite his 2023 loss to incumbent Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

“By God’s grace, yes,” GRV affirmed when asked if he would participate in the 2027 race.

While he did not clarify whether he would contest under the Labour Party (LP) platform or switch to another political party, Rhodes-Vivour emphasized the need for a united opposition to challenge the dominance of the APC effectively.

“If all parties do not come together, it is going to be a waste of time running in 2027 because there is a full state capture happening in this country now,” he explained.

For now, Rhodes-Vivour said his focus is on strengthening the Labour Party to serve as a formidable platform for his political aspirations.

Critique of Tinubu’s Reforms

During the interview, GRV also weighed in on the economic reforms introduced by President Bola Tinubu since assuming office in May 2023. The reforms, including the removal of fuel subsidies and the floating of the naira, have sparked widespread debate and criticism due to their impact on ordinary Nigerians.

Rhodes-Vivour argued that the reforms disproportionately benefit government officials, bankers, and close allies of the President, leaving the average citizen grappling with severe economic hardship.

“Today, over 70 per cent of people’s income is spent on transportation and food. They’ve not even started to think about how they can afford accommodation,” he lamented.

He described the prevailing governance style as wasteful and extravagant, a contradiction to the economic realities faced by most Nigerians.

Rhodes-Vivour’s declaration marks the beginning of what promises to be a heated race for Lagos State's governorship, with his focus on unity among opposition parties and policies aimed at alleviating economic hardship likely to shape his campaign strategy.
