Gov. Okpebholo Raises Minimum Wage to N75,000, Prioritizing Workers’ Welfare in Edo State

Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State has announced an increase in the minimum wage for Edo workers from N70,000 to N75,000 per month, emphasizing the importance of improving the living standards of the state's workforce. The announcement was made during his May Day speech at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin.

In his address, Okpebholo expressed deep appreciation for the contributions of Edo workers to the state's progress and reiterated his administration’s ongoing commitment to enhancing their welfare. "It’s our way of saying thank you, Edo workers," he remarked, emphasizing that the increase in wages is a step towards acknowledging their dedication to the betterment of the state.

Okpebholo highlighted several initiatives his government has undertaken to improve workers' conditions since taking office. These include the conversion of over 1,000 casual workers into permanent civil service employees, the hiring of 500 teachers, and the review of over 3,000 casual teachers for full employment. Additionally, he announced the recruitment of 450 clinical and non-clinical hospital staff, as well as the regularization of 126 contract workers at Edo State Specialist Hospital.

The governor also mentioned that his administration had cleared the outstanding salary arrears owed to Edo Polytechnic staff. In the judiciary, judges who had experienced delayed appointments were sworn in and are now performing their duties without further administrative hindrances. Okpebholo also revealed the introduction of health insurance for retirees, underscoring the importance of supporting workers even after they leave active service.

Further emphasizing his administration’s commitment to workers, the governor assured that his government would continue to prioritize the timely payment of salaries and pensions, structured recruitment, and workers' professional development.

During the celebration, Acting NLC Chairman for Edo, Comrade Bernard Egwekhide, commended the governor for his policies that have eased the financial burdens faced by workers and pensioners across the state. He praised the governor’s actions, which he said have significantly improved the lives and civil rights of Edo workers. Egwekhide also expressed gratitude for the governor's dedication to workers' welfare, stating that the achievements thus far have surpassed expectations.

Egwekhide also took the opportunity to thank President Bola Tinubu for the support to Edo State, highlighting the ongoing construction of the first flyover and the approval of a second flyover for development. He noted the significant attention given to federal roads in the state, thanks to the partnership with the Federal Government.

The new wage increase and other efforts by Governor Okpebholo reaffirm his commitment to the welfare of Edo State's workers and contribute to making significant strides in improving living standards amid the current economic challenges.
