Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has been selected by the Federal Government to lead the Nigerian delegation to the 60th International Art Exhibition (Biennale Arte) in Italy. The event will take place in the Veneto region from April 16 to 18, 2024. This nomination comes in recognition of Governor Obaseki's impactful reforms in Edo's arts and culture sector.
The announcement was made in a statement by the governor's aide, Mr. Crusoe Osagie, on Thursday. According to the Federal Government's letter to the organizers and the Italian Government, Governor Obaseki was nominated as the Commissioner of the Nigerian Pavilion and leader of the country's delegation to the prestigious cultural art exhibition.
The letter highlighted Edo State's rich heritage and cultural significance, particularly Benin City's status as a historical and artistic hub in Nigeria. Governor Obaseki's administration aims to support arts and culture by developing a cultural district in Benin City, which will include new structures and existing landmarks like the National Museum Benin City.
The Federal Government emphasized its support for Edo State's cultural initiatives, aligning with its goal to revitalize the cultural sector as a primary revenue generator for Nigeria. The governor is expected to sign an agreement with the Italian Government during the event, fostering a socio-cultural and economic relationship that will benefit the growth and development of both Edo State and Italy.
