Governors and the Ministry of Solid Minerals have agreed to form a joint committee to enhance the solid minerals sector's potential and address existing challenges. This move aims to align with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's agenda for the sector's development.

The decision was made during a crucial meeting between the Nigerian Governors' Forum and the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Dele Alake. Chaired by Kwara Governor AbdulRasak Abdulrahman, the meeting highlighted the application of cooperative federalism principles to resolve mining sector issues.

During the meeting, Alake emphasized the Federal Government's commitment to involving states in refining mining policies and procedures. He stressed the need for transparency and adherence to the constitutional framework to avoid discord between federal and state authorities.

Alake also commended states that have actively applied for mining licenses, noting the prompt approval of these applications. He highlighted the formation of the Mineral Resources and Environmental Management Committee (MIREMCO), where states have significant influence, as a step towards addressing mining and environmental challenges.

Ogun Governor Dapo Abiodun and other governors emphasized the need for collaborative frameworks that allow states to participate in the licensing process. They called for tailored consultations to address regional challenges within the mining sector. The resolution from the meeting underscores the commitment to cooperation to reform the mining sector and boost its contribution to Nigeria's GDP and national revenue.
