Former Head of State, retired Gen. Yakubu Gowon, has called on Nigeria's leaders to adopt the transparent and people-oriented leadership exemplified by late President Umaru Yar'Adua. Gowon made this plea at the first Umaru Yar’Adua International Leadership Conference and Awards in Abuja, organized by the Global Initiative for Leadership Success.
Gowon emphasized the importance of moral uprightness among leaders and citizens alike, stating that sustainable development hinges on addressing society's most pressing needs. Reflecting on his time with Yar'Adua when he was the governor of Katsina state, Gowon credited Yar'Adua's swift governance for the eradication of Guinea worm.
He praised Yar'Adua for establishing the Justice Muhammed Uwais Electoral Reforms, aimed at ending electoral malpractice. Retired Maj.-Gen Abdullahi Mamman, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the initiative, described Yar'Adua's governance as sterling, noting its positive impact on the economy and society.
Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue urged Nigerians to support both state and federal governments for effective governance. He lauded Yar'Adua's fight against corruption and emphasized the importance of transparency and inclusivity in governance, echoing the principles he strives to uphold in his administration.
