Gunmen Attack Benue Links Bus, Kill Driver and Passenger, Abduct 12 Others
The Management of Benue Links Nigeria Limited has confirmed a tragic attack on one of its buses, where gunmen killed the driver and one passenger, and abducted 12 others. The company, owned by the Benue State Government, made the revelation through its Information Officer, Mr. Johnson Ehi, in a statement issued on Friday.
The incident occurred on Thursday near Otukpo Burnt Bricks, as the bus, with Registration Number PP512, was traveling from Makurdi to Otukpo. The statement indicated that the attackers fatally shot the 18-seater bus driver, Mr. Samuel Agege, along with a front-seat passenger.
While the gunmen attempted to abduct the remaining passengers, three individuals managed to escape, and one passenger had disembarked earlier at Taraku Town, before the attack occurred.
The company strongly condemned the deadly assault, expressing deep sorrow over the loss of lives. “We extend our deepest condolences to the families of the deceased and stand in solidarity with those whose loved ones remain in captivity,” the statement read.
The company also assured the public that it is in constant communication with security agencies, who are making efforts to rescue the abducted passengers. "We appreciate the swift response of the law enforcement agencies and express confidence in their ongoing efforts to rescue the victims," the management added.
The Benue State Police Command confirmed the incident, with the State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Sewuese Anene, stating that the details of the attack would be made available later. Security agencies are currently working to address the situation.
