In a strategic move to boost food security and promote economic diversification, Nigeria’s House of Representatives has advanced a bill to involve the Armed Forces in agricultural production. The bill, sponsored by Hon. Babajimi Benson (APC, Lagos), seeks to establish the Armed Forces Farms and Ranches to support food security efforts and reduce Nigeria's reliance on oil revenues.
Leading the debate, Benson highlighted the initiative as an innovative approach to leverage the Armed Forces' resources for agriculture. He noted that the Defence Farms and Ranches would operate under the Nigerian Army Farms and Ranches Limited, incorporating the Command Agriculture initiative. This scheme aims to increase food production by utilizing military land holdings, manpower, and organizational capabilities, contributing to the country's food security and economic stability.
“This scheme is not entirely new; it builds on past efforts where military farms existed to sustain personnel,” Benson remarked. “By engaging the military in agriculture, we’re enhancing food production and supporting Nigeria’s broader goal of economic diversification.”
The initiative could represent a significant shift in Nigeria’s economic landscape, promoting agriculture as a viable alternative to oil. If passed, the bill will mark a collaborative effort between military infrastructure and national agricultural objectives, reinforcing Nigeria’s commitment to a more resilient, diversified economy.
