The House of Representatives on Monday questioned officials of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) over allegations that popular cross-dresser Idris Okuneye, known as Bobrisky, bribed them after his conviction in April. Both agencies denied receiving any bribes, with the EFCC refuting claims that Bobrisky paid N15 million to have money laundering charges dropped. The NCoS maintained that Bobrisky served his sentence at the Kirikiri Maximum Correctional Centre, not in a private apartment as alleged.
Bobrisky, convicted in April 2024 for abuse of the naira and sentenced to six months in prison, regained his freedom in August amid rumors of preferential treatment. The allegations resurfaced after social media influencer, Martins Otse, also known as VeryDarkMan, released an audio recording allegedly made by Bobrisky, claiming he bribed his way to serve his sentence outside the facility. The House of Reps called for an investigation into the matter, prompting the appearance of EFCC and NCoS officials before a joint committee.
During the hearing, NCoS officials explained that Bobrisky was moved to a different cell due to his unique physical features and security concerns. They also confirmed that Bobrisky’s friends provided food and other amenities for him during his time in custody. Meanwhile, EFCC representatives defended their decision to drop money laundering charges against Bobrisky, emphasizing that the burden of proof lies on the accusers.
As the investigation continues, the House has demanded medical proof for Bobrisky’s absence from the hearing, warning that further delays would not be tolerated. Additionally, VeryDarkMan claimed to have more evidence of Bobrisky’s preferential treatment, sparking further inquiry into the matter.
