BENUE — The Idoma Area Traditional Council (IATC) has dismissed reports suggesting that President Bola Tinubu and the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) were affected by the recent suspension of chieftaincy titles in Idoma land.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by the Secretary to the paramount ruler of the Idoma Traditional Council, Adegbe Uloko, the IATC clarified that neither the President’s name nor that of the SGF appeared in any of the lists submitted for vetting.
The clarification follows rumours and media reports linking Tinubu to the titles nullified after the council suspended conferment of traditional honours within Idoma land. The IATC explained that the suspension, first announced on August 19 and reinforced on September 2, was a general directive to halt all title conferments by intermediate councils pending proper vetting and approval.
“At no time did the list submitted to the Idoma Area Traditional Council contain the name of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria or that of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation,” Uloko stated.
He noted that the first-class chief of Igede, HRH Ero Oga, had been directed to step down the conferment of titles as part of the council’s efforts to safeguard cultural dignity and prevent abuse of the process.

The IATC stressed that the suspension was not targeted at any individual but aimed at preserving the sanctity of Idoma customs, ensuring that traditional honours were not politicised, and maintaining peace and development in Benue State.
By distancing Tinubu and the SGF from the revoked titles, the council sought to quell speculation and reaffirm its authority as the apex traditional institution in Idoma land.
