The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has announced the arrest of several key sponsors behind recent riots in Nigeria, where protesters were seen hoisting foreign flags and calling for a change of government. Egbetokun noted that an ongoing investigation aims to uncover the motives behind these subversive actions.
Speaking at a joint media briefing at the Defence Headquarters on Tuesday, Egbetokun revealed that the police had traced and blocked funding sources from both domestic and international backers of the riots. He emphasized that the police have managed the crisis without using excessive force, deploying only tear gas to control crowds and denying any involvement in the reported shooting of an innocent protester in Kubwa, Abuja.
The Comptroller General of the Nigerian Immigration Service, Kemi Nandap, also spoke at the briefing, stating that some of the riot sponsors have been identified as individuals residing in the diaspora. She mentioned that these individuals have been watchlisted, and any attempt to re-enter Nigeria will prompt immediate action from the appropriate agencies.
Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, highlighted the importance of constant media briefings to maintain transparency and demonstrate the security agencies' commitment to their duties. He affirmed that the security forces are focused on apprehending enemies of the state and will continue to uphold professionalism in their operations.
Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Taoreed Lagbaja, reassured the public of the Nigerian Army's dedication to protecting democracy, peace, and harmony in Nigeria. He advised youths to refrain from violence and confirmed that the army would continue collaborating with other security agencies to maintain stability.
DSS spokesperson Dr. Peter Afunanya confirmed the arrests of some sponsors involved in distributing foreign flags during the protests, urging Nigerians to remain patient as the identities of these individuals will soon be disclosed. Afunanya emphasized the ongoing efforts to ensure the security of citizens by profiling immigrants and monitoring their movements in and out of the country.
The coordinated statements from various security chiefs underscore the unified approach of Nigeria's security apparatus in addressing and mitigating the recent unrest and its underlying causes.
