The Inspector-General of Police, Olukayode Egbetokun, revealed on Thursday that the police received reports of 141 terror cases, 214 kidnappings, and 537 homicide cases in the last eight weeks. Egbetokun noted that 3,685 suspects were arrested for their involvement in various crimes, with 401 kidnap victims rescued during this period.
Speaking at the Nigeria Police Force Headquarters in Abuja, Egbetokun highlighted the significant progress made in combating criminal activities nationwide since the last conference held on February 8, 2024. He reported a total of 141 cases of terrorism/secessionist attacks, 537 murder cases, 126 cases of armed robbery, 214 kidnapping cases, and 39 cases of unlawful possession of firearms.
Egbetokun emphasized the importance of proactive and technology-driven policing strategies in responding to current internal security threats. He highlighted the need for meticulous analysis of available information to pre-empt criminal activities, disrupt illicit networks, and swiftly apprehend perpetrators. The IG also noted that the police have presented cheques totaling N7,263,391,051.73 to 2,514 families of deceased police officers over the last nine months.
He reiterated the commitment of the police to excellence, emphasizing the importance of remaining vigilant and adaptive in their approach to stay ahead of evolving threats.
