The Ijaw Integrity Group (IIG), a think-tank, has called for the withdrawal of military troops from Igbomotoru Town in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State. The soldiers had reportedly invaded the community in search of suspects linked to the killing of four army officers and 13 soldiers in Okuama community of Delta State on March 14, 2024.
High Chief Walter Moneyman, the Chairman of IIG, praised the military for withdrawing troops from Okuama in Delta State, where the soldiers were killed. He stated that this move had reduced tension in the area.
Moneyman emphasized that the withdrawal of soldiers from Okuama, the epicenter of the attack, should also happen in Igbomotoru Town, despite the absence of any boundary between the two locations.
He highlighted that the people of Igbomotoru had suffered greatly from the incident in Okuama, living in fear of military reprisals while soldiers remained in their community. Moneyman expressed that the presence of soldiers had made life difficult for the residents, especially children who were uneasy with armed soldiers around them, hindering their ability to attend school.
Moneyman urged the military to conduct future operations professionally and with consideration for civilians to prevent harm to innocent citizens. He also called on the people of Igbomotoru to remain peaceful, law-abiding, and respectful of authority to maintain peace in the community.
