The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has revealed that the nomination of candidates by political parties for the November 16 governorship election in Ondo State will close on Monday. INEC chairman Prof Mahmood Yakubu made this known during the political parties’ quarterly meeting in Abuja.
Prof Yakubu stated that 18 political parties had their primaries monitored by the commission and that the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) will resume in Edo and Ondo states ahead of the off-cycle elections, with the Edo State Governorship election scheduled to hold on September 21.
He emphasized that political parties have until 6 pm on Monday, 20th May, 2024, to submit the list of only two candidates (governorship candidate and running mate) to the Commission, with no extension of time.
Regarding the CVR, Yakubu announced that it would run from May 27 through June 5, and only new registrants and those seeking to transfer their registration are eligible. The registration will take place at Ward level and the INEC headquarters in the two states, with no online pre-registration option due to time constraints.
The meeting also saw the Inter Party Advisory Council (IPAC) calling for the restoration of the annual subvention to registered political parties, while discussions around the legitimacy of the LP national convention organized by the Abure-led National Executive Committee (NEC) continue, with INEC stating it did not monitor the said convention.
