The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has issued a stern warning to political parties, candidates, and their supporters in Edo State ahead of the upcoming governorship election. The Commission has prohibited the wearing of campaign attire or the display of campaign materials at polling units on Election Day, Saturday, September 21, 2024.
Sam Olumekun, INEC's National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, emphasized that all official campaigning must end at midnight on Thursday, September 19, in compliance with the Electoral Act of 2023. Any rallies or processions beyond this deadline will be considered illegal.
The statement reads: “In line with Section 94(1) of the Electoral Act 2022, and item 12 of the Timetable and Schedule of Activities for the 2024 Edo State Governorship election, all campaigns by political parties must conclude at midnight today, Thursday, September 19, 2024. Any form of rally, procession, or media campaign after this period is prohibited under Section 96 of the Electoral Act 2022.”
Olumekun also reminded parties, candidates, and supporters to refrain from wearing campaign-branded clothing or bringing promotional materials to polling units on Election Day. INEC urged all stakeholders to comply with these legal provisions to ensure a smooth and lawful electoral process.
