IPMAN and Rights Group Criticize Prolonged Closure of Warri Jetty and Depot

The Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) and the rights group Justice Agenda have expressed their dissatisfaction over the extended closure of the Taurus jetty and depot in Warri, Delta State. The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Regulatory Authority (NMDRA) sealed these facilities in January due to an investigation into the discharge of over 9.8 million litres of water instead of PMS from the MT Austria vessel.

Harry Okenin, the Chairman of IPMAN Delta State, highlighted the significant hardship faced by members whose products remain locked in the Taurus depot. He criticized the prolonged closure, stating it is unfair to subject the depot and its members to substantial losses over an issue beyond their control.

Abira Solomon, Executive Director of Justice Agenda, noted that the ongoing closure is not only damaging businesses but also discouraging potential investors. He called on the NMDRA to expedite their investigation and release their findings to avoid further economic damage and uncertainty among stakeholders.

Justice Agenda emphasized the necessity of a thorough investigation into the incident at the Koko terminal but criticized the excessive duration of the process. They pointed out that the six-month shutdown of the only terminal used for petroleum product discharge and the continuous closure of Taurus jetty and depot are detrimental to the region's business activities.
