IPOB Leader Nnamdi Kanu Seeks Negotiations with Federal Government

The leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has informed the Federal High Court in Abuja of his intention to seek negotiations with the Federal Government under section 17 of the Federal High Court Act. This section allows the court to promote reconciliation and facilitate amicable settlements among parties in any proceeding.

Kanu, speaking through his lead counsel, Alloy Ejimakor, revealed this strategy on Wednesday after moving two applications before the court. The first application involves moving form 49 and an application objecting to the court's jurisdiction. Ejimakor stated that if these applications are denied, they will seek the implementation of section 17 to promote negotiation.

In response, counsel for the Federal Government, Adegboyega Awomolo, stated that he lacked the authority to negotiate on behalf of the government, advising Kanu to approach the Attorney General of the Federation. Justice Binta Nyako added that the court's role was to hear cases, not act as a solicitor.

Kanu has been in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) since June 2021, following his arrest in Kenya, and is currently facing terrorism-related charges brought by the Federal Government.
