Israeli air strikes in the southern Gaza Strip city of Rafah resulted in at least 35 Palestinians killed and dozens wounded, according to Palestinian health and civil emergency service officials. The strikes targeted a Hamas compound, killing the group's chief of staff for the West Bank and another senior official. The Israeli military stated the strikes were carried out with "precise ammunition and on the basis of precise intelligence."
The attack occurred in the Tel Al-Sultan neighborhood, where many people were sheltering after fleeing from other parts of the city due to Israeli ground operations. The International Committee of the Red Cross reported an influx of casualties at its field hospital in Rafah.
In response to the Israeli strikes, Hamas launched rockets from Rafah. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's war cabinet convened to discuss continued operations in Rafah, citing the UN court's ruling allowing for some military action there. Efforts to halt the fighting and return hostages have faced obstacles, but there are signs of progress following meetings between Israeli, US, and Qatari officials. Netanyahu has reiterated that the war will not end until Hamas is eliminated.
