The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) clarified that Ms. Tiamiyu Ayisat Morenikeji, who was asked to remove her hijab at Bafuto Institute, Ejigbo, Lagos, did not lose any time from her scheduled examination. According to JAMB's Public Communication Advisor (PCA), Dr. Fabian Benjamin, this clarification is necessary to dispel erroneous insinuations that she was not allowed into the examination venue until after 30 minutes, with some even calling for compensation. Benjamin described these claims as a misleading narrative aimed at exacerbating an already-settled issue.
Benjamin explained that the incident lasted not more than five minutes and occurred before the official commencement time for screening, let alone the examination itself. He noted that the supervisor at the center, a lecturer of Islamic studies at one of the nation's universities, promptly addressed the issue by instructing affected candidates to retrieve their hijabs and proceed for screening after educating the official who gave the misleading instruction. It was also stated that Ms. Tiamiyu was one of the earliest candidates to present herself for screening.
The incident was thoroughly investigated by JAMB, and it was confirmed that the candidate's time was not affected in any way. Benjamin emphasized that the examination officials acted promptly to address the situation, allowing the candidate to undergo necessary processes before taking her examination in good time.
JAMB urged all stakeholders, including religious and civil society groups, to be cautious with their requests, as the Board does not pander to the whims and caprices of any group, creed, or individual. The statement emphasized that JAMB will continue to be fair and just in its dealings, ensuring that no candidate is intimidated or denied their rights. The Board called for support and understanding from individuals and groups to assist in ensuring a smooth examination process for all candidates.
