The Kano State Assembly on Thursday dissolved all five emirate councils in the state, declaring that Governor Abba Yusuf holds the sole constitutional authority to appoint new emirs. This decision was made during a plenary session where the Kano State emirate council amendment bill was considered and passed after its second and third readings.
Deputy Speaker Alhaji Muhammad Bello Butu explained that repealing the law that created additional emirates aims to restore Kano's lost glory. He stated that the division of the Kano emirate into five parts had diminished the state's capacity and dignity on the national stage.
Majority Leader Alhaji Lawan Hussaini Dala added that the emirate council had historically served as the custodian of culture, a role he believes was compromised by the creation of additional emirates. He clarified that with the amendment, all five emirate councils are abolished, and the commissioner for local governments will serve as the interim overseer.
Additionally, the Assembly adopted a motion to establish a new second-class emirate council in the state, further restructuring the traditional leadership framework in Kano.
