Kano Lawmaker Dumps APC for NDC, Meets Kwankwaso in Abuja

A member of the Kano State House of Assembly representing Gwale Constituency, Abdulmajid Mai Rigar Fata, has officially defected from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).

The lawmaker was formally received on Thursday by former Kano State governor and leader of the NDC, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, at his residence in Maitama, Abuja.

The development was disclosed in a Facebook post by Kwankwaso’s media aide, Saifullahi Hassan.

According to Hassan, Mai Rigar Fata was received alongside former Vice Chairman of Gwale Local Government, Kabiru Sani Auwal Obi, and Mahadi Isa Umar, who also joined the party.

“His Excellency, Sen. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, welcomed Hon. Abdulmajid Isa Umar Mai Rigar Fata, member representing Gwale Constituency in the Kano State House of Assembly, following his defection from the APC to the Nigeria Democratic Congress,” the statement read.

Mai Rigar Fata, who represents Gwale Local Government Area — the home base of Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf — was first elected into the Assembly in 2023 under the platform of the New Nigeria Peoples Party before later moving to the APC alongside the governor.

Reports indicated that his latest defection followed his inability to secure the APC ticket to seek re-election into the state assembly.

The move came shortly after a Federal High Court ruling on Thursday cleared the way for politicians seeking to defect to other political platforms ahead of the next elections.

Reacting to the ruling, the spokesman of the African Democratic Congress, Bolaji Abdullahi, described the judgment as a major boost for politicians considering alternatives outside the ruling APC.

According to the party, the court ruling would strengthen freedom of association and could lead to more defections from the APC in the coming weeks.
