Kano Lawmaker Dumps NDC, Returns to APC as Barau Welcomes Defection

Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin, has welcomed the return of the member representing Makoda State Constituency in the Kano State House of Assembly, Muhammad Ahmad Tomas, to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The development marks another political realignment in Kano State as political activities begin to gather momentum ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Tomas, who recently defected to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), announced his decision to return to the APC during a visit to Senator Barau’s residence in Abuja on Monday.

He was accompanied by the Chairmen of Makoda and Dambatta Local Government Areas, Alhaji Isa Currency and Alhaji Jamilu Abubakar Dambatta.

Reacting to the defection, Barau described the lawmaker’s return as a significant boost for the ruling party and a positive step for political development in Kano State.

“Today, I had the honour of receiving back Hon. Muhammad Ahmad Tomas, member of the Kano State House of Assembly representing Makoda State Constituency, to our great party, the All Progressives Congress, from the Nigeria Democratic Congress,” Barau stated.

The Deputy Senate President said Tomas’ decision demonstrated his commitment to progress, development and effective governance.

According to him, the lawmaker’s return would further strengthen the APC’s structure in Kano North Senatorial District and across the state.

“His foresight in realigning with the APC demonstrates his commitment to progress and good governance,” he said.

Barau assured the returning lawmaker of equal opportunities within the party and called on members to remain united as preparations for future elections intensify.

“Together, we will continue to work tirelessly for the growth and success of our party, Kano North Senatorial District, Kano State and Nigeria as a whole,” he added.

The defection is expected to further reshape the political landscape in Kano as parties continue to position themselves ahead of the 2027 elections.
