Kano, North will repay Tinubu’s goodwill in 2027 – Barau

The Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin, has said that the All Progressives Congress (APC), along with the people of Kano State and the northern region, will repay President Bola Tinubu’s goodwill with their support in 2027.

Barau made the remark on Monday during his annual undergraduate scholarship programme held at the newly renamed Yusuf Maitama Sule Federal University of Education, Kano.

The event was attended by several dignitaries, including the Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development, Yusuf Ata, Kano APC Chairman, Prince Abdullahi Abbas, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Abdullahi Kadage, and ASUU Chairman, Ado Abdullahi, who all praised President Tinubu for his contributions to the state.

In his address, Senator Barau thanked the President for approving the long-awaited upgrade of the institution to a university, describing Tinubu as “a leader who loves Kano, the North, and Nigeria as a whole.”

“This approval was something we had been pushing for nearly ten years. Mr President made it happen without hesitation, showing his genuine commitment to education and human capital development,” Barau said.

He added that President Tinubu had never turned down any of their requests, emphasizing that the North and Kano people would show their appreciation at the right time.

“We have never gone to him with a request and been refused. Why shouldn’t we love such a president? We must reciprocate this kindness — and we will, come 2027,” he declared.

Barau also thanked the President for renaming the university after the late Alhaji Yusuf Maitama Sule, a respected statesman, diplomat, and Kano elder, noting that Tinubu’s gesture demonstrated his “deep respect for Kano and its heroes.”

“It was painful when the previous decision to name a state institution after Maitama Sule was reversed by the Kano State Government. But when I brought it to Mr President, he approved the renaming immediately. That’s the kind of leader he is,” Barau said.

He further announced scholarships for 1,000 students from Kano North Senatorial District, promising to extend the programme across the state.

“Education is the foundation of every developed society. If I, as a grandfather and a PhD student, can still pursue learning, then no young person has an excuse to stop,” he told the students.

Barau reaffirmed that investing in education was the surest way to empower communities and drive long-term progress.

In his remarks, Kano APC Chairman Prince Abdullahi Abbas and Minister Yusuf Ata commended President Tinubu for his continuous support to Kano and the North, while Prof. Kadage, the university’s Vice Chancellor, praised Senator Barau’s “visionary leadership” and recalled that the university was established through a bill sponsored by Barau at the National Assembly.
