Kidnap Kingpin Evans Seeks Mercy, Claims He’s Now Reformed and Studying in Prison

Evans

Chukwudimeme Onwuamadike, better known as Evans, the alleged notorious kidnap kingpin, has pleaded for leniency from the Lagos State Government, claiming he has turned a new leaf and is now a 200-level university student while serving time in prison.

Evans' lawyer, Emefo Etudo, made this revelation on Wednesday at the Lagos High Court in Ikeja, where his client pleaded not guilty to an amended five-count charge of murder, attempted murder, and conspiracy to commit kidnapping.

Evans’ Plea for Mercy

Etudo told Justice Adenike Coker that Evans had applied for a plea bargain through the Lagos State Attorney-General’s office, arguing that his client is now remorseful and committed to a new path.

"Our focus in this matter is the plea bargain, which we have submitted to the state government. My client is now a repentant person. He was a young man consumed by crime, but he is now remorseful," Etudo stated.

According to the lawyer, Evans has been making efforts to reform himself in prison.

"Presently, he is a 200-level student at the National Open University. He even made A1 in all his NECO papers while in prison, thanks to a Federal Government scholarship that supports his education," Etudo added.

Wants to Educate Youths About Crime

As part of his plea for clemency, Etudo said Evans is willing to give back to society by educating Nigerian youths on the dangers of crime.

"We have asked the Lagos State Government to give him the opportunity to go around schools and talk to youths about the consequences of criminal activities," he said.

State Government Confirms Plea Bargain Request

The State Prosecutor, Y.A. Sule, confirmed receiving Evans' plea bargain application and stated that appropriate authorities would review it.

"I can confirm that the 1st defendant (Evans) has indeed applied for a plea bargain, and it was served on us. We shall be examining it. The second defendant has also made a similar application," Sule said.

Following the submissions, Justice Coker adjourned the case to March 20 for a possible trial.

‘Evans Is Now Born Again’ – Lawyer

Speaking to journalists after the court session, Evans’ lawyer claimed that his client had undergone spiritual and moral transformation, thanks to the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) and the Federal Government.

"My client is now a changed man. His reformation was made possible by the RCCG and the Federal Government, which gave him a scholarship to study and become a better person," Etudo declared.

Public Reaction and Next Steps

Evans’ plea for leniency has sparked mixed reactions, with many questioning whether his transformation should influence the court’s decision. The Lagos State Government now faces the task of deciding whether to accept his plea bargain or proceed with the full trial.

With the March 20 hearing set as the next milestone, all eyes remain on how the court and government will handle one of Nigeria’s most infamous criminal cases.
