Kwankwaso Rules Out Alliance with Atiku, Obi Ahead of 2027 Elections

Efforts to unite opposition forces against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 presidential election hit a stumbling block as Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), dismissed the possibility of a power-sharing deal with Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi. Kwankwaso cited a lack of trust and past deceptions within the opposition landscape, labeling the rumors of a pact with Atiku and Obi as baseless speculation.

Speaking on a Hausa BBC program, Kwankwaso refuted claims of any meetings with Atiku or Obi regarding potential political cooperation. He criticized attempts to spread false narratives, including claims of a rotational presidency arrangement involving the trio, which he described as manipulative and deceitful. “Such lies are part of why many of us left the PDP,” he said, lamenting the re-emergence of divisive tactics within opposition ranks.

Kwankwaso emphasized his decision to steer clear of political distractions until the end of 2024, allowing governments at all levels to focus on governance. He accused some politicians of exploiting northern sentiments without delivering tangible benefits to the region, urging them to demonstrate their contributions before seeking support.

Reflecting on his departure from the PDP, the former Kano State governor blamed the party’s leadership for forcing him and other key figures, including Peter Obi, to defect. He expressed skepticism about reconciling with those he holds responsible for past humiliations, asserting that any attempt at alliance must address historical grievances and ensure genuine commitment to the nation’s progress.
