The Kwara State House of Assembly has called on the state government to investigate the failure of a consultant to pay N3 billion in salary arrears to local government and SUBEB workers in the state. The funds were released to the consultant in February 2024 to clear all salary arrears inherited from the previous administration, but three months later, the arrears remain unpaid.
Hon. Mohammed Baba Salihu, representing Okuta/Yashikira constituency, moved a motion during plenary titled "The Need For Consultant In Charge Of Payment Salaries Of Local Government And SUBEB Workers in Kwara State To Ensure Prompt Payment Of Salaries Arrears To Local Government Workers." He expressed concern over the delay in payment, which he said was defeating the purpose of the release.
The Assembly, after debating the motion and receiving support from other members, appreciated the state governor for his efforts in ensuring the prompt payment of salary arrears. It urged the governor to direct the relevant ministries to investigate the delay and collaborate with the Local Government Service Commission to expedite the payment process.
Furthermore, the Assembly directed its committees on Education, Human Capital Development, and Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs to invite the consultant handling the payment to explain the reason for the delay and ensure the prompt payment of arrears to all beneficiaries. The Assembly also called on the consultant to expedite the payment process without further delay.
