Julius Abure, the National Chairman of the Labour Party, who was detained on Wednesday in Benin City, along with other party members, has been released. The arrest, which took place in the Edo State capital, reportedly involved a joint effort by police officers and Department of State Services (DSS) operatives. It followed a petition by the LP Youth Leader, Comrade Eragbe Anselm Aphimia, loyal to factional chairman Lamidi Apapa, alleging an attack by some party members in December 2023.

Abure's arrest occurred just 48 hours before the party's primary election for the September 21 gubernatorial polls in the state. However, he was released on bail on Wednesday night. Addressing supporters on Thursday morning, Abure expressed gratitude for their solidarity and support, acknowledging the challenges faced since the last election. He refrained from discussing the specifics of the arrest, citing ongoing investigations.

The incident has drawn attention to internal party disputes, highlighting tensions within the Labour Party in Edo State. Abure's release on bail signifies a temporary respite, as investigations into the matter continue. Supporters hope for a swift resolution, allowing the party to focus on its upcoming primary election and the broader political landscape in the state.
