Labour Party Chairman Julius Abure Re-elected Amid Controversy

Julius Abure

Despite opposition from the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Mr. Julius Abure was re-elected as the national chairman of the Labour Party for a second term by delegates, with unanimous affirmation. However, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) stated that it did not monitor the purported national convention held in Nnewi, Anambra State.

Shortly after his re-election, Abure declared the positions of deputy national chairmen of the party, reserved for the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC), vacant. The convention empowered the National Working Committee (NWC) to fill existing vacancies in the NWC and NEC.

A communique issued at the end of the convention, signed by Abure and Alhaji Umar Farouk Ibrahim, the National Secretary, recommended that the 2027 presidential ticket of the party be solely reserved for Mr. Peter Obi based on his antecedents before, during, and after the 2023 general election. The convention also passed a vote of confidence on Dr. Alex Otti, the party's governor in Abia State, recommending that the 2027 Abia State gubernatorial ticket be reserved for him.

The convention, in its review of the state of the nation, expressed concern over the worsening security situation, high inflation, unemployment, and deteriorating living conditions. It called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to take proactive steps to revive the economy and encourage indigenous producers, recommending the establishment of a sound economic team to revamp economic strategies and utilize the nation's abundant natural and human resources.
