The Deputy Governor of Abia State, Ikechukwu Emetu, has said the Labour Party (LP) is open to receiving President Bola Tinubu, former presidential candidate Peter Obi, and other influential politicians who may decide to join the party as it moves to rebuild under new leadership.
Emetu, who heads the party’s National Steering Committee on Membership, Revalidation and e-Registration, made this known on Monday while presenting a progress report and handing over to the Nenadi Usman-led National Caretaker Committee.
He spoke while reacting to questions on whether Peter Obi would be welcomed back into the party if he fails to secure the presidential ticket of his new platform, the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
According to Emetu, the Labour Party operates an open and inclusive system, stressing that nobody is barred from joining the party regardless of status.
“The Labour Party is a party for all. It is a national party and not a cult group where people will be restricted,” he said.
He also stated that even President Tinubu would be accepted if he decides to defect from the APC before the 2027 elections.
“Even Mr. President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, can decide, on or before the 2027 elections, to join the Labour Party, and we will gladly accept him,” Emetu added.
On the ongoing resistance by the former National Chairman, Julius Abure, who has vowed to appeal the judgment recognising the Usman-led caretaker committee, Emetu dismissed the move as irrelevant.

“The only court Abure can take his appeal to now is the volleyball court. The Supreme Court judgment has confirmed this,” he said, adding that the party has moved on.
A Federal High Court in Abuja had last month ruled that Abure’s tenure had expired and ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to recognise the caretaker committee led by Nenadi Usman pending the conduct of a national convention.
INEC later complied and replaced Abure’s name with Usman’s on its official website, listing other national officers including Darlington Nwokocha as National Secretary and Hamisu Santuraki as National Treasurer.
