Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has directed that essential food items at the "Ounje Eko" markets in all five divisions of Lagos be sold at a discounted rate starting Sunday, March 17. This initiative aims to provide relief to Lagosians by offering a 25% discount on staple foods such as rice, beans, gari, bread, eggs, tomatoes, and pepper.
To ensure transparency and prevent exploitation, a voucher system will be implemented during the initial phase. Selected independent payment solution providers and food vendors will manage the process, providing real-time data for monitoring purposes.
Prices of the discounted items have been set to promote affordability and fairness. For example, a 5kg bag of rice will be sold for N5,325, while a 1kg bag will cost N1,065. Similarly, a 5kg bag of beans will be priced at N6,225, with a 1kg bag at N1,245. Prices for other essential food items will be communicated through various media platforms.
The "Ounje Eko" food markets will be accessible at 27 locations in Ikeja, six in Lagos Island, nine in Ikorodu, five in Epe, and 10 in Badagry divisions. Governor Sanwo-Olu urges all Lagosians to support this initiative, monitor the process, and provide feedback through official Lagos State Government channels.
