Lagos Government Vows to Demolish Unsafe Buildings After Dosunmu Market Fire

The Lagos State Government has reiterated its commitment to demolish buildings that fail its integrity test, following the collapse of 14 buildings near the Dosunmu Market fire incident on Lagos Island. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu emphasized this stance, stating that many residential apartments had been converted into warehouses, posing significant risks.

Speaking after assessing the aftermath of the fire, Governor Sanwo-Olu expressed regret over the preventable disaster, noting that access was initially denied to first responders. He emphasized the need for strict adherence to construction regulations, stating that any property found to be non-compliant would be demolished.

The Dosunmu Market has been closed indefinitely, with the government pledging support to those affected by the fire. Governor Sanwo-Olu emphasized the importance of prioritizing safety and preventing avoidable accidents, stating that resources should be allocated to more progressive endeavors. He attributed the fire to gross carelessness and underscored the government's commitment to ensuring the safety of lives and property in the state.
