The Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) has identified over 15 distressed buildings within the Iponri Estate, Surulere, which are set for demolition due to concerns over their structural integrity. General Manager of LASBCA, Gbolahan Oki, announced that occupants of the affected buildings have been served multiple warnings and notices, urging them to vacate to prevent potential loss of life and property.
Oki emphasized that vacating these distressed buildings is in the public’s best interest, as their compromised structures pose significant danger and could collapse at any moment. He reiterated LASBCA’s commitment to upholding building safety standards and assured that the agency will continue to monitor and inspect buildings across the state to identify similar risks.
Lawmaker representing Surulere 1, Desmond Elliot, alongside Special Adviser to the Governor on Housing, Barakat Bakare, urged residents to comply with evacuation orders. Elliot praised LASBCA’s efforts in maintaining safety and sanity in Lagos’ built environment, encouraging residents to adhere to building codes and regulations to protect lives and properties.
