The Lagos State Government has disbursed N849,555,000 in scholarships and bursaries to 10,066 students in its tertiary institutions. This was announced by the Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Mr. Tolani Sule, at the 2024 Ministerial Briefing of the government held at the Bagauda Kaltho Press Centre, Alausa, Ikeja.
Sule highlighted the commitment of the Babajide Sanwo-Olu-led administration to providing effective and affordable education to residents of the state, noting that the T.H.E.M.E.S plus Agenda of the administration had been evident.
He praised the state-owned tertiary institutions for not participating in workers’ strikes, demonstrating the government’s commitment to education development. Sule emphasized the governor's dedication to this agenda, stating, “Not going on strike when all other tertiary institutions are on strike is a feat that we pride ourselves on.”
Regarding the scholarship and bursary disbursements, Sule detailed that N335,600,000 was approved for 1591 beneficiaries as the 2022/2023 Scholarship Award for undergraduates and PhD recipients, as well as the 2022/2023 Governor’s Discretionary Awards. Additionally, N513,955,000 was approved for 6884 in bursary awards for undergraduates and law school students.
He also highlighted the state government's efforts in promoting a reading culture among students by rehabilitating and digitalizing 300 secondary schools and 40 public libraries. Sule noted that power generating sets were provided to ensure the smooth running of these facilities, with a monthly allocation of N250,000 to each digitalized library.
Lastly, the commissioner emphasized that 16 years remains the admissible age into all Lagos State-owned tertiary institutions, stating, “If your age is below 16, you are not eligible.”
